Evaluation

Climbing Documentary:

For my Main project I decided to create the climbing Documentary, I thought this would be a good Idea to pursue with it being the first time I have made any sort of good length film/documentary/music video to start with a subject that I know a lot about and will be able to easily fill 5 minutes of film.
For the Documentary I had set out a storyboard plan for what was going to be in the documentary and when, I believe looking back at the documentary that I have done quite well to follow my storyboard with only a couple changes which have had to be made to make the documentary run smoother, with any production I believe it is essential that if changes need to be made and when in the productions tages you don't believe that it will work out that it is better to make these changes and then acknowledge that as it will hopefully end up with a much better product at the end of the production.

Although the documentary will not be to everyone’s liking, I believe that the target audience that I have aimed it towards there will be a good amount of people who will want to find out more about climbing maybe with the thought of taking it up, so this documentary will be hitting some people inside of my Target Audience, from my own experience of climbing of 3 years this target audience has been put correctly, through also speaking with friends and teachers around the school they agree that not all of them believe the Documentary is good they do agree that it is a younger generation who may like it more, with the possibility of older adrenaline Junkies wanting to go out of their way and watch the documentary on the television.

Although my Time Plan that I had set out didn’t go totally to plan due to illness and missing a couple of the big production times I believe that I haven’t done badly to finish the documentary in time, this was due to trying to get a hold of John Fox to interview and climb in the Documentary and also the weather not being suitable to film the outdoor climbing, the time plan was initially created to make sure that the documentary would be completed on time, this is why i believe that even though i didn't manage to follow it word for word, the time plan then allowed me to see what i have missed and what i still need to do which is much better then not having any idea of what parts of the production and editing would be done.

Sub Task- Newspaper Advert

I am very pleased with how my Newspaper Advert has turned out, with not having much Photoshop experience behind me I have learnt very quickly and used effects and merging very well I believe. I am glad I have left the large image of the cliff and the climber climbing up in on the right hand side with the added background of the fading colour which gives a good contrast between the two, using the magic wand tool I managed to get all of the unwanted background image (of the climber/cliff) out so that I could fill every small area of the background with the Photoshop colour background which I have added an effect to, .

The newspaper advert gives out all of the information that I wanted the user to find out, and have found that is the usual information that is on an advert from my research.
If I was to make any changes on my Tv advert I would try and make it a bit larger then the size that I choose to create it at first, although I don’t believe this is a bad size as my research showed that there are some adverts that are able to be in the papers like how i have created,  I think it would be more eye catching to the reader if it was a full page advert, apart from that I am very pleased with the final production of the newspaper advert.

The text tools on photoshop are also very helpful as i was able to research and look up a text called 'rock' that was perfect for an advert about rock climbing, this gave the advert a more catchy look and drags the viewers attention to the advert.

Sub Task- Double page Spread.

I find it hard to judge how I have created my double page spread, throughout my research I found it very hard to find any double page magazine spreads that were dedicated to a documentary, because of this I decided to analyse a mix of a few different Double page spreads, and from doing this I have found that there are many similarities throughout all of the double page spreads as well as DPS's being set out very differently to each other.
I have created a double page that is aesthetically pleasing and drags the attention of the reader towards the images dotted around the page and the writing, I believe that the text that is on the page compliments all of the photo’s which can easily be read on the good photo in the background of one of the climbing area's,  I have chosen to use as it describes what happens in the documentary and what the audience may find interesting, this will hopefully entice the reader into tuning into the channel and watching the documentary which the date of showing is at the bottom right of the double page spread.

The image that is in the background of the Double page spread gives the DPS a much better feeling of a sunny climbing area that entices the reader into reading, this is good as there is no point in creating a DPS which doesn't make people want to find out more about.

On the double page i have also included in large at the top the name of the documentary with the same 'Rock' text that was downloaded and then inserted into the program, this means that the DPS and the newspaper advert have the same feeling about them that they are part of the same program.

On the bottom right of the two pages i have added in when the documentary is showing and which channel, this is essential as it means that the audience doesn't have to go looking and finding out when the documentary will be aired and hopefully will remember or right down to see the documentary.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

One way in which I have managed to develop and use forms and conventions of other real media products that I have found is to follow the same sort of structure that can be found inside a documentary, of what sort of clips are in the documentary and how it is all put together, for example from my research into both other documentaries and the codes and conventions, I have taken that I need to use voiceovers throughout ontop of Real Footage of Events and Archive footage which I found happened in every one of the documentarys I analysed, another section that I decided to add in which I had found was used as a code or convention that is used in a lot of documentarys is interviews with people who know about the subject area you are talking about, in my case the climbing partner I climb with runs a adventure activity business which meant it was perfect for me.
One way in which I have challenged some of the codes and conventions was to split up my documentary into 3 or 4 separate sections about the sport of climbing, I decided this would be the best way to go as I was targeting the audience of around 20-40 which meant that there will have been a lot of people who haven’t been climbing before and want to find out and learn a bit about it, having the different sections means that they can learn more about it and offer then an insight into Climbing as a whole, whilst having the documentary on Jersey at the same time.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I believe that the combination of my main Climbing documentary and the ancillary texts of a Newspaper Advert and a Double Page Spread in a Magazine merge together extremely well to create three pieces of work that flow with the same theme, with the two ancillary texts easily recognizable as leading up to the main documentary, I have tried to carry through some of the same images righ the way through the three projects as this will link them even futher.

Another way in which I have decided to make it noticeable that the two ancillary texts are linked is using the same text for the ‘Climbing- The Adrenaline Rush’ Title in the same place of the advert and Double Page Spread. I think that having the star ratings and Quotes from reviews of the documentary is a good idea to have in the Newspaper advert and Magazine spread so that it is once again noticeable the the texts are linked.
In the end I believe that the two ancillary texts go well with the Climbing Documentary and continue the theme right the way through the project, if I saw either the advert or the double page spread when reading I would Atleast take a look into what the documentary is like.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Several media technologies were used throughout the construction, research, planning and evaluation:

Research: Through the technology advances of the internet and the way in which we are able to collect and use the research of such media products as newspaper adverts, other documentaries and any research that i have needed throughout the AS and especially the A2, this has been good as it means that I have been able to broaden the market research that i have been able to carry out throughout the whole A level to create a final documentary that conforms to as many of the codes and conventions of a normal documentary as possible.

Planning: For the planning the main media technology that was used was Imovie to clip together the animatic storyboard as a video version of the drawn images, I believed this was a very good way to express what I wanted my final documentary to look like, this also gives a better idea of following the plan then trying to read it off pictures on a page.

Construction:

Double Page Spread: For the Double Page Spread I used the technological program of Adobe inDesign, a great program that had a option to set out how a double page spread should be set out, this was very good for aligning any writing or images, other tools such as backdrops meant that the finished product of the DPS was much more professional without these tools.

Newspaper Advert: The newspaper advert for the production was created on Adobe Photoshop CS3, this program is great for manipulation of images and writing to create a final professional product, for example the background image had flare from the sun in the sky, this was easily sorted with the magic wand tool allowing me to select only the sky and delete this, which was then edited to make the background look a bit like the sky using colour.
Another big advantage of using the technologies at hand was the Advert title which was 'Climbing, The Adrenaline Rush' which i managed to find online a font called 'Rock' which looked a bit like rock which is good for rock climbing, adding this into my Adobe Photoshop fonts meant that the advert had a feeling much more of a professional advert.

Documentary: The technology that was used for the production of the Documentary was using the program iMovie, a program which comes on the iMacs and is very helpful for editing the sound and clips together to create a good final product as a climbing documentary, the sound manipulation being able to move the volumes around was very helpful.
When the documentary had been finished I was easily able to export the documentary into quicktime which is a universal program which means that It can easily be viewed.

The way in which i have used media technologies in the construction of the tasks was mainly through PhotoShop CS4 and 2009 iMovie, the use of these two created a good finish product after a lot of effort and time changing what i had filmed and editing it.
For my main task i used iMovie to create the documentary which i believe came out very well, I imported the clips into imovie and after that cutting the clips together meant that i could use the transissions and effects to add to the experience of the documentary, another good thing about iMovie was that i was able to use Garageband on the Mac's to create a backing track to the documentary and add it into the documentary with ease.
For my Newspaper Advert I decided to use Photoshop CS4 for the things that I could do with it, after adding the background image and editing parts out with the magic wand i managed to get a good background and after that i just had to change the text, for not knowing much about photoshop before starting I believe that I have managed to create a very good piece of work in the end.
The Double page spread that i created started out in Photoshop and then was moved to inDesign for the ease of creating a double page spread with the margins for where the columns should be already on the page, once this has been done and I have added the background image onto it, I decided on the title, text and photos to use which meant that in the end once i had everything collected I would be able to finish the double page spread in little time, Although this is what i thought it wasn't exactly true as the Double page spread took a lot longer then I thought to create it.
I blieve that how I have used the media technologies that I had to hand i have managed to create a documentary and two ancillary texts which are very good and I am very pleased with them.

What have you learned from your audience feedback
My Audience Feedback has told me a lot about the main task that I have produced and also the two ancillary texts, the main task being the documentary supported by the Newspaper advert and the double page spread, From the research it has shown me that I have managed to re-create the codes and conventions of the three projects the audience think and believe that I have managed to create a documentary that people will be wanting to watch and are interested in, The audience feedback has shown me that if it was put on at prime time that 70% would be interested in watching it.

Audience Research

Above you can see that after I have showed 30 people including around 20 teachers around the school Whether the documentary is interesting and worth watching during prime time television 70% of them thought that it was worth the watch.

Above shows that from these 30 people that they do believe in 97% of cases that I have managed to conform to the codes and conventions of a documentary.

When carrying out the audience feedback I asked family friends, friends at school and teachers around the school to get the best feedback that i could and i believe that this worked well as I have found that i have managed to conform to the codes and conventions of a documentary in 97% of the people believing out f the 30 asked and also that 70% of the questioned group thought that the documentary was interesting and worth the watch.

This feedback is great to clarify what I thought of the documentary myself.

Production

Documentary:

Above you can see the first stages of my documentary, after filming the clips that I will be wanting in the documentary I have imported them into iMovie and they are now sitting in the events page.

Above shows all of the clips in it in separate events folders which total around 1 hours 15 minutes of filming, which is cut down into a 5 minute documentary.

Above is the next stage that I went through, as can be seen I have dragged and split the different clips from in the events page, Once i have chosen which sections of the clips that I have taken and cut them down to the parts I want I needed to link them together with Transitions which can be seen below:

Above you can see all of the different transitions that I could choose from, I decided when editing my documentary that I would use a range of all of these transitions so that there is variety and not just the same transition every single time.

At the beginning of the documentary I have a globe spinning to Jersey as the destination for the documentary, I managed to find a clever section on iMovie which was able to create this for me, above shows all the different maps that I could use, I believed this was a good way to start the documentary so decided to add it in.

Throughout my documentary I have a few titles to each section and the beginning of the documentary, I have added these on straight from iMovie which can be seen above, I once again decided to choose a selection to add variety to the documentary.

Above is the way in which I added my music into the documentary, after creating a 5 minute repeating jingle in Garageband I exported it into iTunes which meant i was able to grab it straight from iMovie and into the documentary.

After I had spent many hours tweaking and fine tuning the documentary as well as I could i exported the documentary through Quicktime in the 'Share' area of iMovie.

Newspaper Advert:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC4G_krwz2I

(sorry its on Youtube, blogger wasn't allowing uploading)

Above is a screenflow Video of how i created the newspaper advert, this shows the steps I went through to create the advert and what parts of photoshop I used.

This screenflow video is a good way of showing how I have used photoshop to create my advert.

Above is an image of photoshop, to the right hand said above you can see all of the laters with the effects that I have put onto the advert, at first only the bottom two layers are turned on to show.

Above is an image showing how I started off in photoshop with just my background photo, this shows that I have used the magicwand tool in the toolbox and changed the intensity of the wand, once I have got this right I have managed to magicwand the background sea and sky out of the photo so I can put a better background in myself, I have also managed to reduce the intensity and delete the inside of the climbers body around his arms, which I think is very good.

The next stage was the rest of the background, as you can see I have used a gradient tool which is in the toolbox/pallet to merge the black and blue colours towards the climbers, I really like this are it brings out the contrast between the cliff/climber and the gradient colour.

The next part was the title text, I didn't want one of the generic fonts that are used over and over again so i went online and found RockBiter text, which looks somewhat like rock, after installing the text onto the mac i used it in photoshop and thought it went really well with the rest of the advert.

After adding some more text with a backdrop for the date that it is on television and some quotes I finished my Newspaper Advert which I am very happy with how it finished.

Above is all of the layers and effects that are on my photoshop advert, this is a good example to show how I built up the advert.

Double Page Spread:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmJDYxbX0B8

Above is the screen flow of how i have added the photo's onto the DPS and then how I have decided to change them.

Above you can see the final Double Page Spread, I am really happy with the quality of how this has come out and it has been finished to how I would have wanted it.

Above you can see the InDesign Links box which shows all the difference images that I have put into in design.

Above you can see how I have used the margins of the page to have the typing inside, a big title of 'Climbing The Adrenaline Rush in the same RockBiter text as the advert takes up a good proportion of the top of the page.

Above shows how I have angled the photos that are on the double page spread, with a slight angle either way, a stroke behind and a backdrop the way I did this was:

As you can see above I have clicked the backdrop on once highlighting the photo I want to have the backdrop, this will simple just put a black backdrop behind the image to make it look like the image is sticking out of the page.

Above is the next stage I took which was to rotate the image slightly, just click on the tool that can be seen above and then choose the angle I wanted on the image.

The last part of how I did it was to create the white 'box' around the image on the edges, using Stroke i changed the 'Weight' of the lines to 5pt which gave a good outline

Drafts of Subtasks

Drafts of Sub Tasks:

Advert:

What i will be wanting to include in my Advert is the main information that I am wanting the audience to find out about, this includes the name of the Documentary is so that they can look for it at a later date, What the documentary is about, some of the information behind it but not too much, When it is out in the cinemas so that anyone who wants to can see it and also some information about ratings it has been given and quotes from reviews.

Analysis/Explanation:

I believe the all of the information that is above is necessary from my similar media text research to create an advert that will be able to transfer the information to the audience that is needed for the audience to fully understand what they are wanting to do after wards, such as mark down to watch it or decide not to.

Double Page Spread

The information that I will hopefully be adding into the Double page spread will be more in depth compared to the advert, whilst it will still be trying to get the audience to want to watch it, for this reason the information will be directly talking about what is in the actual documentary mixed together with a large number of images of relevant information, this will be the large majority of the page but I will also still be wanting to keep the Quotes from magazine reviews and also the Star Ratings that the documentary has been given as i believe that when someone is wandering whether to watch something they are influenced by what has already been wrote about it

Analysis/Evaluation

From my Target Audience Research I have found that for whatever Tv show/Film/Documentary the theme for all of the Spreads is to have a lot of information on the pages but at the same time have a lot of relevant images that correspond to the text that is on it, this means that the reader doesn't get bored and is interested.

Planning

Main Documentary Planning:

1) Globe Spinning to the next destination of the Climbing: The Adrenaline Rush
2) An opening scene of some shots of outdoor and indoor climbs setting the scene of the documentary
3) More Shots of indoor climbing
4) After a short mix of climbing shots a presenter introduces the show and explains what is going to be in the documentary.
5) It then moves onto climbing areas which has all of the best climbing areas around the island
6) Continues going around the climbing areas/indoor walls

7) After describing what the best areas outdoors and indoors are to climb around the island it will move onto Indoor Traversing on one of the walls, this will describe the techniques that are best to improve.
8) More Indoor Traversing angles
9) To split the two sections of the Documentary a short clip of a slow motion jump onto a hand hold will be played, this will only be a couple of seconds but in slow motion should create a good mix.
10) Climbing Equipment after Indoor Traversing will explain the equipment that is essential to climb safely going through items such as harnesses and Ropes.
11) Continuing with equipment
12) Outdoor Climbing, which will be a a clip of a experienced climber at one of the climbing areas, most probably Tresspass point creating a good camera shot.

13) An interview with the climber about what he loves about climbing in Jersey/Future Prospects etc.
14) Interview cuts in and out mixing with the footage of him climbing.
15) The End.

Secondary Advert Planning:

Above you can see the plan for my Newspaper advert, the Advert includes a good image of a climber climbing up a cliff, also in the advert a large part is taken up by the title 'Climbing- The Adrenaline Rush' which is needed, below that is the different star ratings it had been given and information about the documentary, another large part is the Date and Time that it is on as the audience needs to know when to see it.

-Good Background image of a Climber to solidify the theme of the Climbing Documentary
-Bold Statements throughout so that the Audience knows what its about.
-Quotes from Magazine reviews

Third

The planning for my Double page magazine spread really centralized around what i had seen in other magazine spreads, I decided a mix of photo's with relevant text to the photo would be a good idea which can be seen above, a good size title is necessary and I am also going to add in some Quotes and Star ratings that the Documentary received.

- 4 to 6 Relevant images of climbing taken and from the documentary.
- Text around the images about what is happening in the documentary
- Bold name of documentary so that everyone knows what the double page spread is about
- Quotes and Star Ratings

Animatic Storyboard

Above is the Animatic storyboard with my writing below to describe what is happening in each scene.

Codes and Conventions of a Documentary

What makes a documentary a documentary?

Voiceover
The voiceover will usually be authoritative in some way, encouraging the audience to think that they either have some kind of specialist knowledge or, as in the case of people like Michael Moore and Nick Broomfield: ‘the right’ opinions that people should pay attention to.

‘Real’ Footage of events
Documentary is essentially seen as ‘non-fiction’ although there are debates around this.
However, a convention of documentary is that all events presented to us are to be seen as ‘real’ by the audience.
Documentarians often go to great lengths to convince us that the footage is real and unaltered in anyway, although editing and voiceover can affect the ‘realist’ we, as viewers, see.

Technicality of realism
Including ‘natural’ sound and lighting in the documentary to make sure that the audience believe the realism.

Archive footage/stills
To aid authenticity and to add further information which the film maker may be unable to obtain themselves looking through archive footage can bring more realism into the documentary and bring an element of past that can’t be created without the archived footage

Interviews with ‘Experts’
Used to authenticate the views expressed in the documentary. Sometimes, they will disagree with the message of the documentary, although the film maker usually disprove them in some way.

Use of Text/Titles
Watch out for the use of words on screen to anchor images in time and space. Labels, dates etc tend to believed unquestioningly and are a quick and cheap way of conveying information.

Sound
Listen out for the use of non-diegetic sound.
Has music been added?
Why what effects does it have?
Is sound used as a bridge between scenes and if so what meanings are made?
An example is ‘Super size me’ –The use of childish music throughout to undermine McDonalds.

Set-ups
Not just reconstructions of events that happened in the past but also setting up ‘typical’ scenes’. So if you want to quickly convey ‘classroom’ you might ask a class to put their hands up like there’s a lesson going on and the teachers just asked a question. Strictly speaking what you’re showing is not ‘true’ the teacher didn’t ask a question, but it is a way of cheaply getting footage a crew might have had to wait fifteen minutes for if they had just waited for it to happen ‘naturally’.

Visual Coding
Things like mise-en-scene and props. Is that doctor any less a doctor if she’s not in a white coat and wearing a stethoscope?

Target Audience

The target audience that I am going to be aiming my Climbing documentary towards is an audience that is aged between 20-40 but can be enjoyed by a younger audience as well, the reason that I have decided to leave quite an open ended audience is that a documentary about climbing could be enjoyed by many different people of age ranges, that is why I believe it is best to target the age range that has the most viewers.

The documentary that I have chosen to produce:

The 5 minute documentary that I have chosen to create is a documentary on climbing, I believe this is a good choice of documentary as it can be made into an informative documentary that could attract a large audience of people who are wanting to find out more about climbing, I also think it is a good Idea for me to create a climbing documentary due to already climbing and working for a adventure company, this will mean I have good access to those in the know about climbing such as my boss and also to get down to climbing areas around the cliffs.

Above is the results of the first question on the questionnaire, the results show that 3/4 of the audience do watch documentaries, this is a good result as it shows there is a large range of audience that can be targeted with only 1/4 of people who do not watch documentaries.

Out of those questioned, the main age range was between 21-40 having 65% and the rest of the 35% is split between the 10-20 and 41+, this is quite a good statistic as it shows that the target audience to hit the most people would be good to aim between 21 and 40.

The graph above shows the statistics of what the most watched tv genre of program is watched, Documentary shows came a close second behind Tv Game shows which backs up there being a large market for Documentaries.

The next question that was asked was the specific type of Documentary that was liked and it was a wide spread between spoof documentaries, animal/wildlife Documentarys and sporting Documentaries, I believe that the best option for me is to aim towards one of those select area's

After looking at the data that I have received back from my questionnaire I can see that:
• Almost 75% of those questioned do watch documentaries, this means that my potential audience I could target is 30 out of every 40 people/
• The vast majority of those questioned are between the age range of 21-40, this may be the perfect age range to be my target audience to get the largest audience.
• Out of 40 people, the type of program that the viewer likes to watch is a documentary 30% of the time against other types of television program as comedy soap operas and tv game shows.
• There is not one distinctive documentary that everyone likes, Animal/nature comes out on top with 35% of those questioned with a share of 25% each for spoof and sporting documentaries.
• Most people watch 10+ hours of television a week, with only 26% of the 40 questioned watching less the 10 hours which is 10 people.

Questionaire - Research

Questionnaire:

For the research for my Documentary I went into town and asked 40 people to fill in the questionnaire below on what they think of documentaries, I believe this is a good amount of people and it isn’t too few due to there being a large variation of results.
From the results I get from the questionnaire I can look into how I can aim my Documentary towards the largest

Newspaper Advert Research

http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/9190/wrestleruknewspaperadvebo9.jpg

Above is the newspaper advert of ‘The Wrestler’, I have had to look into other sorts of Newspaper adverts due to finding it incredibly hard to find any Documentary adverts, only film adverts.

There are a few points that I will be taking out of this first Newspaper advert to re-create in my own climbing documentary advert:
- Quotes from newspapers about the documentary
- Star rating from newspapers/sites about the documentary
- Bold striking title of what the Documentary is, the audience will straight away know what the documentary is.
- Relevant background image that goes well with the advert to keep the theme of the documentary running through the advert.

The Wrestler advert is a good advert to start looking into similar media texts as it has most of the codes and conventions that would be found in any advert whether it be in a newspaper or magazine, there is a lot of good points that I can take from this such as making sure the fonts that are used are interesting and also making sure that the title of the documentary is the main one that everyone can notice straight away.

Above is a second example of a newspaper advert that would span a whole A4 page, I look at this and think that is slightly worse then ‘The Wrestler’ advert that is above as it is harder to understand the meaning of what the film is about straight away and when it is out in the cienema, an upside of this advert is the font that is chosen for the title as it goes along with the dark and gloomy outlook of the black background.

The points that I will be taking from this advert are:
- Make sure it is obvious when the documentary is going to be showing so that the audience knows.
- Have a good font to drag the audience into looking at the advert and finding out more about what the documentary is.
- Make sure that all of the writing on the advert is readable and isn’t too small.

The Exorcist poster is a good example of making a poster that isn’t cluttered with information and gets the bare essential facts over to the audience, the bold date of when it is out will get the audience remembering, nearer the bottom the title of the film ‘The Exorcist’ is also the largest piece of font there is on the page so your eyes are dragged down to the name of the film.
On the advert there are no review quotes from any newspapers or magazines which could put some of the audience off thinking that it isn’t that good, whilst this could be an attempt to show that the film is still as good even though it doesn’t have the quotes.
The simple ‘…What a day for an exorcism’

The double page spread that can be seen above is a colorful example of spread in a magazine bright colours throughout the spread drag the attention towards the advert and main background image, the main title taking up atleast a third of the page in white writing with the contrast to the other colours lets the reader know that is where the title is which has been done well, on the left hand side of the double page spread there is minimal writing only introducing you to what is going to be described on the second half, which is obviously going to be about tomatoes.
On the right hand page of the double page spread is where the real information is transferred over, mixed in with other images at slightly angled ways keeps a flowing theme throughout the double page spread.

What I would like to take from this example:

- Bright Colours keep the readers attention more then black bland colours, make sure to use bright and 'warm' colours.
- Make sure the title is the biggest and boldest part of the double page spread so that it is identified as the program it is straight away.
- Relevant pictures in the background.

Above is another example of a Magazine double page spread for a Documentary which was featured in BackPacker Magazine, Ireland, this is a great example for me to look at and take items from due to it actually being a double page spread of an actual documentary, the two pages are packed with loads of photos that are made to look like holiday snaps which are once again all angled on different degrees of tilt.
The title is the biggest section of the double page spread and it is there to drag the attention.
The double page spread has simplicity with very little actual text but the space is filled really well with many photo's.
It doesn't matter that some of the photos break onto both sides of the page of the spread due to when being opened, you can see the crease line but the photo's flow from one page to another.

What I can take from this page:
-Possible photo's that could be split between the two pages.
-Good photo's that are relevant to the text to keep the reader interested
-Angled photo's to give the spread a bigger feeling of depth.

The third magazine double page spread above is cleverly created so that the double page looks as if it is actually just one page, this has been created through using the whole of the 2 pages as a work plane and merging photo's over both pages and some of the writing, this has to be done careful in case of how the magazine opens that you cannot actually see parts of the photo's or writing, although it is a bit blander and does not have a real background image, just a white background this does make it easier to read the text then some other magazine spreads that are around, especially in this spread there is a good balance between the amount of photo's that have been chosen and how much writing, this will not put the reader off as it is a digestible amount of writing. Although i think that there are good points about the magazine spread I believe that it is the weakest of the three magazine spreads as there is a lot of white blank space around the place, especially behind the columns of writing.

The Science of Sport: Cricket is a documentary that is split up into 6 mini seven minute long video’s, in the part above Cricket is explained through a variation of on video interviews, voiceovers and video footage, including digital footage of the sport, there is a theme running through the 7 minutes which is a documentary about cricket, the skills required at the highest level and how to improve the modern cricketer in terms of skill and fitness levels, right from the start it starts explaining about cricket with a narrator on the video which you can see, after a short period of time it cuts to the second type of footage which is a previously filmed section that has a voiceover, the video has been sped up so that more can be shown in the short period of time. Throughout the documentary the areas of topic that were outlined at the start are explained in detail mainly having a voice over, The voice over is good to have as it means the video can be seen whilst the audience are listening, this gives the audience a better idea of what the voice over is talking about.

What I could take from this:
- Interview with influential person to give an insight into the sport
- Voiceovers throughout so that relevant information is getting through
- Relevant video footage

Above is a wildlife documentary from ukTV documentary, the documentary is narrated by David Attenborough about Tigers, this is a good example of a documentary as it is a subject that is used a lot in documentaries, right from the outset you know what the documentary is about and who is narrating it through a title and into an audio clip of him speaking, this engage the audience with the documentary as you can see that he hasn’t just done the voiceover after but throughout the creation, this ‘introduction’ is good as it sets the rest of the documentary up for all that is going to be in it.
Throughout the documentary it is split up into slow moving informative sections and less informative fast moving sections during a chase scene between the tigers and the prey, usually during these faster paced areas the voice over throughout the documentary drops off to let the audience watch and concentrate more on what is going on.

What I could take from this:
- After a titles scene straight into the narrator or presenter will give the audience a face to face feeling for the rest of the documentary
- -Voice-overs throughout to keep the theme running through.
- Must be informative but also punchy and fast moving.

The documentary about Inside Mecca above is a National Geographic documentary about the pilgrimage to Mecca by Islam, it has the same codes and conventions as the others such as voice-overs and a running theme throughout the documentary, in this one it has archive video footage from years ago about what happened to start Mecca, this gives an insight for anyone who is watching, an interview at the start gives an insight into the view of someone who is influential there. Once this interview moves onto into the video clips the rest of the documentary is basically voice-overs, the documentary is good because it goes through all the stages of Mecca and why people want to pilgrimage towards Mecca, this is very informative to the viewers.

What I could take from this:
- Interviews with influential people of the area give good information
- Voice-overs throughout to keep the documentary flowing
- Cover many area’s throughout so that the viewer doesn’t get bored.

The documentary on Ancient Mysteries: Bigfoot is different to the other documentaries that I have already analyzed, straight away there is encounters with people who have seen ‘Bigfoot’ and are re-living what they saw and were on the camera, in-between this there is an interview with a man who believes that it is all in the imagination, this is giving the two sides to the documentary and leads onto which side is right, throughout the documentary voiceovers, tales of what has been seen, interviews and archive footage are cleverly put together to create a documentary with constant suspense, the non-diegetic spooky music behind the documentary creates the feeling of a mystery, which is what the documentary creator will have wanted, the pictures tales and stories keep the viewer thinking that the Bigfoot may exist, with statistics of hundreds and hundreds of sightings.
The documentary is cleverly put together to create the tense feeling with a real story about the Bigfoot.

What I can take from this:

-Depending on the documentary I decide to do, suspense is good for keeping the viewer interested.
- Interviews with accounts throughout by specified people
- Voice-overs Throughout.
- Many video shots so that the viewer can keep interested in the documentary.

Above is the start to the documentary by Jackie Chan named ‘Jackie Chan: My Stunts" Documentary, this is a good example of a documentary which has the star of the documentary, Jackie Chan narrating and speaking throughout the whole program, from the start you can see it is going to be a fast paced and enjoyable documentary through the house-hold name of Jackie Chan known for all of the big films that he has done and the first 40 seconds of the documentary were it is him showing off all of the martial art moves that he can do, it does into a profile of Jackie Chan and what he has done in his life which means that any of the viewers who don’t really know what he has done can find out, straight after this it describes all of the sections that are going to be in it including scenes from films such as ‘Rush Hour’, having him narrate and be in the camera shot throughout means that the viewer feels as if it is a documentary that is going to be factual, using the footage of films that he has been in and also recorded footage of how he creates his martial art scenes, and then being described afterwards by Jackie means the audience can really understand what he is about.

What I can take from this:

- Introduction to the documentary explaining what will be in the program.
- Voiceovers talking over what is happening in each section of the documentary.
